Motivational Interviewing Training

Once heath care professionals have completed Introductory Self-Management Training, they are eligible to participate in Motivational Interviewing workshops and webinars to gain proficiency supporting patient’s to make healthy changes.  We offer a variety Motivational Interviewing workshops and monthly webinars. 

 

Motivational Interviewing Workshops

Level 1: Using Motivational Interviewing Skills to Build Rapport 

In this workshop, participants will focus on enhancing their Motivational Interviewing engagement skills to build rapport as well as learn how to set a client-centered agenda. Participants will practice open-ended questions, affirmations, reflections and summaries (O.A.R.S.) and agenda mapping skills.

Pre-requisite: Choices and Changes or Brief Action Planning 

 

Level 2: Supporting Clients to Commit to Change

Most people who need to make a change are ambivalent as there are reasons to change (change talk) and reasons not to (sustain talk). Helping people resolve ambivalence through eliciting change talk is often the key to facilitating behavior change. In this workshop, participants will learn how to assess a client’s readiness to change, learn how to differentiate various forms of change talk and learn about evocative questions that elicit change talk. Goal-setting and action planning skills will be reviewed to develop client-focused action plans.

Pre-requisite: Using Motivational Interviewing Skills to Build Rapport 

 

Level 3 Workshops 

 

Motivational Interviewing:  Putting it All Together

In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to practice and integrate the skills within each of the four (4) processes of Motivational Interviewing while working through a client scenario. Participants will have an opportunity to self-reflect on their practice and also receive guided observational feedback during skills practice.

Pre-requisites: Using Motivational Interview Skills to Build Rapport and Supporting Clients to Commit to Change 

 

Motivational Interviewing Strategies for Working Through Challenges

In this workshop, participants will learn advanced Motivational Interviewing strategies to engage clients who are not thinking about making changes (pre-contemplative) using Stages of Change-based interventions. Strategies to engage with clients that are highly ambivalent about changing will be reviewed and practiced.

Pre-requisites: Using Motivational Interview Skills to Build Rapport and Supporting Clients to Commit to Change 

 

Motivational Interviewing Skills Practice

In this workshop, participants will enhance their ability to consistently use Motivational Interviewing approaches with clients by identifying where Motivational Interviewing practice gets stuck and use strategies to overcome roadblocks. Observational feedback will be provided to participants by the facilitator and other workshop participants and a framework for documenting Motivational Interviewing interventions will be presented.
