Brief Action Planning Workshop
(Completion of the Choices and Changes workshop is strongly recommended prior to registering for Brief Action Planning)
Brief Action Planning is a highly structured, patient-centered and evidence informed Self-Management Support (SMS) technique based on the principles and practice of Motivational Interviewing (MI). It is a structured way of having a conversation with someone who is interested in turning their hopes for healthy behaviours into concrete plans. The core skills can be used by anyone interested in supporting others to make change.
One hour practice calls are offered to all participants one to three weeks after the initial workshop to provide participants an opportunity to practice demonstrating the model. Participants are required to complete at least 2 practice calls in order to receive a certificate. Brief Action Planning is offered as a full day workshop to learn 5 core skills for facilitating patient centered action planning.
By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
- Describe the Spirit of MI in health behavior change
- Utilize three core questions during patient visits
- Demonstrate and receive feedback on 5 core skills for facilitating patient centered action planning
